Regional
Baton Rouge Workforce Analysis-July 2007
Ascension Parish employers have found the regional labor market to be productive and committed. Collaboration between private industry and educational institutions has led to the development of valuable training programs and curriculum that assist in preparing a skilled workforce. Almost 365,000 people make up the labor force in Ascension Parish and the surrounding area.
• The bulk of the current workforce is divided between manufacturing (15.5%), construction (15.4%) and retail trade (14.5%), all surpassing employment in the Baton Rouge MSA and Louisiana.
• According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 62.3% of the population is working age, 20-64 years old.
The Louisiana Technical College Ascension Parish Campus has programs in place to support local industry. With input from industry, the PTEC or petrochemical technology program was designed to develop a workforce with skills in welding and processing technology. In preparation for work in this aging industry, junior and senior high school students train in this hands-on program, while completing studies at area schools. Associate degrees, certificates and diplomas in industrial instrumentation technology, automotive technology, welding, process technology and several other programs are offered through this campus. In neighboring Baton Rouge, the
Baton Rouge Community
College offers over 120 credit courses and industry training sessions.
